When do you need mold certified and insured contractor?

Common sense answer is when contaminated area is large. Usually you can deal with mold yourself if the area is smaller than ten square feet. If you don’t feel comfortable to deal with even small areas, at least call and ask for advice. If the area is larger than ten square feet you need a professional help.

  Do:

  1. Call professional, certified, insured contractor
  2. Avoid contaminated area
  3. Isolate contaminated area with plastic sheeting

 Do not:

  1. Try to do it yourself if damaged area is larger than ten square feet
  2. Try to do it if you don’t feel comfortable doing it (regardless of size)
  3. Turn on fans (you may contaminate much larger area)
  4. Try to “kill mold”: dead spores more toxic and harmful than those alive
  5. Use bleach. Bleach may cause mold to disperse its spores

Contractors performing mold remediation (mold removal) must have additional insurance coverage for remediation and abatement. If they don’t there is no insurance coverage.
