If damaged area is small (smaller than 10 square feet) attempt may be made to clean mold off drywall with mild detergent; however, if after cleaning drywall is still discolored removal may be necessary. Drywall is made with paper and the front and on the back which is great source of food for mold. It is also porous and absorbs water very well. For all those reasons the best recommendation for moldy drywall, in most cases, is removal.
