When do you need mold certified and insured contractor to remove mold?

 

Common sense answer is when contaminated area is large. Usually you can deal with mold yourself if the area is smaller than ten square feet. If you don’t feel comfortable to deal with even small areas, at least call and ask for advice. If the area is larger than ten square feet you need a professional help.

 

Do:

1. Call professional, certified, insured contractor

2. Avoid contaminated area

3. Isolate contaminated area with plastic sheeting

 

Do not:

1. Try to remove mold yourself if damaged area is larger than ten square feet

2. Try to remove mold if you don’t feel comfortable doing it (regardless of size)

3.  Turn on fans (you may contaminate much larger area)

4. Try to “kill mold”: dead spores more toxic and harmful than those alive

5. Use bleach. Bleach may cause mold to disperse its spores and will not remove mold

Please Note:

Contractors performing mold remediation or asbestos abatement must have additional insurance coverage for remediation and abatement (to remove mold and asbestos). If they don’t there is no insurance coverage. In case of accident property owner is liable.   

Insurance company will not provide policy for mold removal to those not properly certified. If your contractor is properly insured he is also properly certified. 

Certification and insurance policy are expensive, check if your contractor is not trying to save money by endangering your safety, health and money.
